The People Mover is a modern public transport vehicle of Venice (Italy). The track has a length of less than 1 km. There are 2 trains, which are driven by a cable. The train runs automatically without driver and was opened in 2010.

The two trains leave at the same time at the two final stops. The system is largely single-track. Only near the middle station (there are 3 stations in total) the peoplemover is double tracked, so that the trains can pass each other. The two trains always depart at exactly the same time.

Our favorite parking garage in Venice is the Autorimessa Comunale. Mainly because of its location and relatively low prices. We have summarized more information about this parking garage in this article. You can book a space in this parking garage online on this english language website.

Our tip: Buy tickets for waterbuses beforehand

It is not always easy to buy tickets abroad. You don't know where to buy tickets, foreign ticket machines are difficult to use, there are language problems, queues, etc.

The 1, 2 or 3 day valid tickets for the waterbuses (ferries) in Venice are needed by almost every tourist. These tickets can now be bought on this english website.

The tickets for the bus from Venice airport to the city are available on this page in English language.

The 3 stations of the People Mover Venice

The first stop of the people mover "Piazalle Roma", the large bus station of Venice. All buses and streetcars from Venice depart from here. Nowhere else in Venice do buses and streetcars stop. All lines go over the bridge to the mainland and then to different destinations. Piazalle Roma is the entrance to the famous Old Town. There are also many water buses (public ferries or Italian vaporetti stop here).

The 2 station called Marittima is after a journey of about 400 meters, including a canal, at the ferry terminal of the cruise ships. Up to 6 large cruise ships can dock here simultaneously. Before the Civid19 pandemic, several cruise ships came to Venice almost daily. Hardly any Mediterranean cruise without Venice.

The third station is called Tronchetto. Here is a gigantic new parking garage. The people who park here then take the people mover to the old town. There are other parking garages directly on Piazalle Roma. You should always reserve parking garages in Venice:

This means that it will mainly transport passengers who park in Venice in the new Giga parking garage Tronchetto or who want to get to the old city center from a cruise ship.

Both sections are about the same length, a good 400 meters each. So the length of the People Mover's route is only about 820 meters. Theoretically you can also walk, but there are only bridges everywhere in the port area, so you would have to take a detour.

Technical data People Mover Venice

The length of the track is only about 820 meters.

The speed of the people mover (translated from the English "people mover") is only about 30 km/h. Nevertheless, the travel time including a stop at the middle station Marittima from end station to end station is only 3-4 minutes.

One train of the People Mover can theoretically transport 200 people. But then it will be very tight, at Corona times like now (July 2020) usually only a few people travel with the train. There are about 64 seats in a train, the rest are standing room.

The people mover system is without a driver. Tickets are only available at vending machines. So the means of local transport does not need any staff at all. Of course there are people who monitor, check, clean, etc. the vehicles and stations.

It is an elevated railroad on stilts (height usually 7 meters). There are escalators and elevators at the stations for the passengers of the elevated railroad. The construction of the people mover cost about 22 million euros.

The People Mover was opened in April 2010. It was built by the company Doppelmayr from Voralberg (Austria), one of the largest companies in the world for cable cars and similar in the mountains. The People Mover also has a similar technology to many rail-bound mountain railroads.

There are, as I said, 3 train stations. The people mover stations look very modern (see picture below). There are doors to the tracks that only open when the train is in station. Exit and entrance are on opposite sides.

The trains of the Pople Mover usually run at 7-minute to 10-minute intervals.

Operating hours People Mover: Daily Monday to Saturday all year round from 7 am to 11 pm. Sundays somewhat shorter: 8 to 22 o'clock in summer and 8:30 to 21 o'clock in winter.

Ticket prices Poeple Mover Venice: 1,50 one-way ticket, which is valid for 75 minutes. During this time you can also change to buses and streetcars for example to Mestre and Marghera. Day tickets and multi-day tickets for the water buses (ferries) of Venice are unfortunately not valid in the People Mover. One holds the ticket at the entrance to the device. If a green light lights up and the barrier opens, you have a valid ticket.

Our conclusion: The People Mover is great and modern. If you have half an hour in Venedug, you can go for a ride for 1,50 Euro. You can drive back within 75 minutes with the same ticket. At the moment (summer 2020) there is not much going on, because not so many people park in Tronchetto because of Corona. The parking garages directly at Piazalle Roma are enough. Also there are no cruise ships because of Corona.
